With temperatures starting to warm up and most of us enjoying it during the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, it is even more important that we hydrate and replenish our bodies after a run or walk. I make these easy homemade electrolyte gummies and keep them in the fridge to quickly pop in my mouth as needed. I believe it makes my post-run both refreshing and fun!

Using two simple ingredients, a little time and fun molds, the whole family will enjoy these healthy, sugar-free versions all summer long. Pick your flavor and go!

Preparing Electrolyte Gummies

I started by choosing a powdered electrolyte made by NOW Foods. I was looking for a sugar-free version for my electrolyte gummies. While pre-made liquid electrolytes are easy to find on the store shelf, they also contain more sugar than I wanted. Luckily, I had raspberry and tropical punch flavored BCAA Blast powder in my pantry. Here’s a little info from their website about the product:

The only other ingredient in homemade electrolyte gummies is gelatin. Gelatin is a fantastic source of protein. It is used as a thickening agent in a lot of foods, including my Chi Tea Panna Cotta recipe. Gelatin is derived from the hydrolysis of collagen and 85% protein. You know how much I talk about adding collagen to your diet as you age. It is even more important if you are as active as me, as a runner!

I love that Great Lakes Gelatin Company, who makes my favorite collagen products, also makes unflavored gelatin. It is keto-certified, non-gmo and all natural made from pasture-raised and grass-fed cattle.

It’s time to make your homemade electrolyte gummies!

Simply, prep your molds and electrolyte liquid. “Bloom” your gelatin by mixing 1/3 c of your liquid with 2 tbsp of gelatin. Now let it sit for 5 minutes.

While you wait, warm the remaining liquid to very hot, but not boiling. Next, slowly add and whisk this liquid to your “bloomed” gelatin until it is all incorporated and smooth.

Pour the liquid into an 8×8 dish or pipe into your molds. Lastly, refridgerate until set and then unmold. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for a refreshing treat!

Homemade Electrolyte Gummies

Sugar-free, post workout recovery gummies are made with just two ingredients and perfect for after a run.

  • 1 cup electrolye liquid pre-mixed
  • 2 tbsp unflavored gelatin


  • Prep your molds if using by placing them on a cookie sheet to make moving filled molds to your refrigerator later, easier. Also, if using powder-based electrolytes, prepare according to package.
  • Pour about 1/3 cup of cold or room temperature ofelectrolyte liquid into a small bowl. Sprinkle the gelatin powder on top. Stir and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
  • While this is “blooming” pour the remaining liquid into a small saucepan. Heat gently until it is very warm but not boiling.
  • Pour a little bit of the warmed liquid into your bloomed gelatin and whisk until smooth, slowly adding more until all is incorporated.
  • Pour the mixture into silicone molds.
  • Refrigerate the electrolyte gummies for at least 2 hours, then pop them out of the molds. I store mine in an airtight container in the fridge.


Note: the little gummybear molds are cute, but the gummies are way too little. Use slightly larger-sized molds.  See the molds I used and a link to get them below.
